Bethany Wray spikes the ball at a practice this summer. Volleyball’s first home game will be Saturday against BYU-Hawaii.

The Weber State University Women’s Volleyball Team will play their first home game of the season Friday, when they take on Brigham Young University-Hawaii. WSU lost to in-state rival Brigham Young University earlier this week.

Although the team has got off to a rough start, Head Coach Tom Peterson said the team is very excited to start the new season and is looking to play strong against BYU-Hawaii.

“We’ve been working very hard in practice, it doesn’t matter which side we’re on,” Peterson said. “We have been competing very, very hard. That’s going to be our strength this season.”

Peterson said that the team is looking to compete in every game and wants to rack up wins this year.

Shanae Langston, a sophomore outside hitter, said she is excited to take on the Seasiders. She said that she is looking forward to an exciting game.

“It will be a different atmosphere because BYU-Hawaii loves volleyball and they play with that kind of passion,” Langston said.

She said the team is hoping that playing on their home court will give them an added advantage over BYU-Hawaii.

“We will also have the support of the school and family members,” Langston said. “It should be an exciting game.”

Langston said that with every game, the team has learned something and has improved.

“Our team has learned a lot,” Langston said. “We have become an incredible team. We have the highest expectations that we will do even better than in the past and we will win this Friday.”

Langston said she thinks this will be an intense game because not only is it WSU’s home opener, but BYU-Hawaii generally has a passionate team and brings excitement to the court every time they play.

Bethany Wray, a junior outside hitter, said she is excited about this game because they will be playing against a team they aren’t very familiar with at BYU-Hawaii. The teams have never played each other before.

“The team is very excited to play at home,” Wray said. “We want to prove to ourselves and to the school that we can do well and come out with a win.”

Wray said she feels the team is ready to compete and can get a win. She said that the team has been preparing for this and is excited to take the court.

“We are ready,” Wray said. “We have stepped it up in practices and have been working harder. We have always played well at the end of the game, but we have been working on playing well from the beginning of the game.”

BYU-Hawaii won their first two games of the season against the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and the University of Alaska-Anchorage. Wray said playing BYU-Hawaii will be exciting, since they generally have a competitive team.

“This would be an exciting game because BYU-Hawaii has always had good teams,” Wray said. “This forces us to step up and play even harder. We are an evenly matched team, so that we will make it even more competitive.”

WSU is looking to get their first win of the season after dropping a game 3-0 against BYU earlier this week. With the loss to BYU, the Wildcats fell to 0-4 this season.
