Recruiters work to attract students

Student recruiters have many responsibilities at Weber State University. They give tours around campus, work in the office and plan events.

“We help individuals achieve their educational dreams,” said Fran Hopkin, director of the student ambassadors. That phrase is a division-wide motto for all enrollment services.

Student recruiters have the responsibility of going to all the high schools and two-year colleges in Utah throughout the year. Some of the ambassadors said they like touring the different schools and getting the high-school seniors excited about WSU.

“I love telling people. It’s energizing,” said Lauren Nelson, a student ambassador.

Hopkin said student recruitment is “critical in the college process for prospective students. They will make a connection with the student recruiters before they make a connection with me.”

He said recruitment is only part of the story; retention efforts are also important.

“I can go tell students in a large auditorium that one of the great things is personal attention with professors, but then when students get here and they don’t get the personal attention they thought they would get, that is the retention,” he said.

In the summer, Hopkin said, the ambassadors act as group leaders in orientation. They are the ones who give new students tours around campus each year.

“For the new students, it is a non-intimidating way to get their questions answered,” said Sydnee Ralph, a student recruiter.

Students can also take part in promoting WSU by simply telling others about the university and what it has to offer. Students can tell others about their experiences at the college and encourage them to look into it.

Student recruiters work in the Student Recruitment and Orientation Office. Hopkin said they have a lot of communication with future or prospective students. After school tours, the ambassadors will enter future or prospective student information in the computer and keep up with those students by using the communication plan, which is contact through e-mail, phone calls, text messages and mailings.

The student recruiters also co-partner with the Student Activity Committee. That way, if WSU is having an activity, the student recruiters make sure to promote the activity at the surrounding high schools as well. By promoting the activity, it encourages high-school seniors to come up to campus and participate with college students.

“If we get them to come up to campus before they graduate, the likelihood of them coming to Weber is greater,” said Ashley Ulrich, ambassadors president.
