Wildcats finish 14th in the Desert

The Weber State University women’s golf team continued in tournament play at the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate Tournament, finishing in 14th place overall. The Wildcats finished the tournament with a total of 960 through the three rounds on Sunday at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif.

The Wildcats opened the tournament shooting rounds of 329 and 325 on Saturday, and closed the tournament with a 326 in the final round on Sunday. Amanda Snyder led the Wildcats, shooting individual rounds of 80, 77 and 76 for a 54-hole total of 233 to finish in 22nd place overall.

Jordan Ulibarri, who also played in the tournament for WSU, said Snyder’s strong performance came after she had put in a lot of hard work in practice.

“Amanda played amazing and really helped our team,” Ulibarri said. “She really deserved to play this well, because she has been working so hard and is such a great player.”

San Diego State University took the team title, shooting 888 for a 16-shot win over second-place Fresno State University. The Aztecs placed two players in the top three, with Christine Wong taking the individual medalist honors after an impressive final round of 69 to take her total to 216 for the tournament. Kaitlen Parsons of Northern Arizona University took second at 220, while Wong’s teammate, Tessa The, finished third at 222.

Last month, Synder was named Black Clover Big Sky Conference Golfer of the Week. Although the Wildcats have played in a couple of tournaments this fall season, they have improved in each tournament.

Sara Federico and Ulibarri shot totals of 248 and 247, respectively, to back up Snyder’s effort. Ulibarri finished in a tie for 49th, while Federico came tied for 53rd.

Ulibarri said she thought the team performed well and showed they have strong character by continuing to play hard for the entire tournament.

“We battled hard out there,” Ulibarri said. “It was a really tough course, and we had a lot of things working against us with injuries and illnesses, but we never gave up and tried our best. I am so proud of our team; no matter what happened out there, they kept a good attitude and never stopped trying.”

Kelsey Chugg shot 254 to tie for 64th, while Alli Cluff shot 267 and tied for 77th to round out the Wildcats’ scoring fivesome. As a team, the Wildcats struggled during the tournament, and said they hope to see some improvement during the next tournament.

Chugg said that, while the team struggled in the tournament, it will help them gain experience, and will pay off in the future.

“I think that it was a tough tournament for the whole team,” Chugg said. “Amanda played well, but the rest of us really struggled to get anything going. I think that more experience and continued hard work and trust will pay off.”

Nyomy Obcemea (259, T-72nd) and Courtney Smith (264, T-75th) played for WSU as individuals. The team looks forward to the upcoming challenges in the next two tournaments.

“I am excited for our next two tournaments, for all of us to play better and show what we’ve got,” Ulibarri said.

The Wildcats will now have a full month off from competition before participating in their final tournament of the fall season, when they will travel to Arroyo Grande, Calif., for the Cal Poly Lampkin Invitational.
