KWCR gives Hope For The Holidays

There is hope for the holidays for some local families thanks to Weber State University’s  KWCR 88.1 FM staff, which raised $916 in its third annual fundraiser, “Hope For The Holidays,” on Nov.19 at the Fresh Market Grocery Store located at 5691 Harrison Blvd. in South Ogden.

Disc-jockeys “The Hogie Bear,” also known as Michael Hoggan, Moffat-Tron, also known as Jason Moffat, morning show guys Nick Smith and Dylon Allred, and Stacie Hinojosa and Gus Koennicke were located at the entrance of the grocery store collecting money and non-perishable food items for the Ogden Rescue Mission for the holidays.

ORM serves 105,000 meals annually, according to Director Gary Doud. Doud also noted that last week, ORM gave out, “463 food boxes for needy families in the area and delivered another 60 food boxes to shut-ins.”

The money raised by WSU’s KWCR radio DJs and staff will be used to supplement additional food purchases, according to Doud.

“This time of the year, we are very busy; actually, we have been busy this whole year,” Doud said. He said ORM has 90 beds. “Recently, we have been filling up the floor even into the chapel, which can sleep an additional 84 men,” Doud said.

Fresh Market also contributed to the fundraiser by donating pre-filled bags of groceries that were sold for $5.00 per bag. Store Director Craig Howard said the Radio Staff  sold nearly 200 bags of groceries. Howard said he really enjoys working with WSU and supporting the university. He said the students who ran the fundraiser on Saturday are “a great bunch of kids.” He also noted the people in South Ogden are “good and generous people.”

The radio station staff noted that Fresh Market is always very willing to let it collect funds outside its front door and is very helpful and supportive.

At one point, the radio station staff raised $54 in just 10 minutes.

Gus Koennicke, a junior majoring in media electronics, video production, said last year, the radio station raised $870.

Jason Moffat, a senior majoring in media electronics, video production, said the best part of being involved in this fundraiser is “seeing the generosity of people, even in hard economic times.”

Students wishing to give additional “Hope For The Holidays” can donate to the Ogden Rescue Mission located at 2781 Wall Ave. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to accept donations. Doud said ORM especially needs ground beef and turkeys at this time of year.
