Baseball starts on sour note

Weber State University’s club baseball team traveled to San Diego, Calif., to open its season against the University of California- San Diego in a three-game series.

The Wildcats struggled over the trip, losing all three games. Despite the losses, the team said it felt that it is in a position to do well this season.

“We lost all three games, so we aren’t very happy about that,” said junior catcher Chance Porter. “We have to have better pitching and more time outdoors. But for our first time outside playing, we did OK.”

The games should have had a different outcome if the team would have taken advantage of the runners it had on base, said Captain Scooter Cisneros.

“We had runners in scoring position a bunch of times, and we never capitalized on it,” he said. “If we would have executed that, we would have beaten them up pretty bad.”

The Wildcats played a double header Saturday, losing the first game 22-14 and the second game 3-2. The third game WSU lost again 10-9. Despite the losses, Cisneros said the team’s performance was better than he had anticipated.

“We haven’t played outside much,” he said. “We hung with them every play. We are going to have a good year this year.”

Club President Chris Abbott agreed with Cisneros, saying he felt the team played well considering it is the start of the season.

“Our offense, surprisingly, performed well for only practicing for two weeks,” Abbott said. “We have a lot of talent this year. We just need some more reps in practice.”

Freshman Cale Thurgood had the top performance at the plate going seven for 11 for the entire weekend. He also hit his first home run.

Cisneros said he was happy with the way the young players performed over the three games.

“Our freshmen played really well,” Cisneros said. “We started three or four freshman every game. They all produced and did their job and really stepped up for us.”

Cisneros said that the team’s infield was strong throughout the entire weekend.

“Our infield was pretty clean,” Cisneros said. “We rolled a bunch of double plays.”

Mike Kilts turned in a solid performance on the mound for WSU.  He pitched six full innings in the second game for the Wildcats and had nine strikeouts.

Although, all the pitchers played well against UC-San Diego they are expected to perform better against University of Arizona Feb. 11-12.

Cisneros said he expects the team to improve as the season continues and the team gets in better shape.

“Our pitching will be better because they will be more in shape,” Cisneros said. “Our batters will produce when they have runners in scoring position.”

The team will take this weekend off from practicing and get back on the grind next week before they travel down to Pheonix, Ariz. the following weekend.
