Women’s tennis came up short on the road in California

The Weber State University women’s tennis team’s two-game road swing to California came up short on Saturday as the Wildcats fell to Sacramento State University and University of California, Davis.

The Wildcats played against SSU on Friday, dropping the match 7-0. The Hornets took all three doubles matches to open the day, and then completed the sweep with a dominating performance in singles play, taking all six matches in straight sets.

The Hornets, who are currently ranked 43rd in the nation, moved to 5-3 overall on the season and won their second Big Sky match in as many matches.

WSU was unable to get close in most of the matches against SSU. The closest match was when SSU’s Andrea Gomez Carus defeated WSU’s Thais Kurer. In the first set, Kurer fell 6-3. Kurer had a better showing in the second set but still came up short, falling 7-5.

The Wildcats then took on UC Davis on Saturday as the finale of their two-match road swing but also fell short in the match the same way to the Hornets 7-0.

It was WSU’s third straight 7-0 loss.

“We had some close matchups,” said Head Coach Jonas Ehrlin. “The girls did well, and we were able to learn a lot.”

The 75th-ranked Aggies won at all three doubles spots with the closest match coming at No. 1 where Brittiny Moore and Ashley Tanner fell 8-3 to Kelly Chui and Megan Heneghan.

Moore said there were some good things in the match, but WSU wasn’t able to close things out.

“We all played our best,” Moore said. “We need to work harder so that the outcomes of those close matches are different, but we are getting there.”

In singles, UC Davis went without losing a set and didn’t drop a game in seven of the 12 total sets played, including a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the lineup.

The Wildcats remain winless in 11 matches this the year while UC Davis improved to 4-8 on the season.

WSU has spent much of the time this season on the road, but now it will return to Ogden and host a series of home matches. Ehrlin said the team is excited to have the opprotunity to play at home and hopes the Wildcats will be able to continue getting better.

“We look forward to playing at home next week,” Ehrlin said.

The Wildcats return home to face Seattle on March 2, which kicks off a seven-match home stand.
