Viewpoint: Take a break from technology

Almost everywhere you look on Weber State University’s campus, you can see the ways technology has impacted students’ lives, whether it’s students taking notes in class on a laptop or watching videos on a tablet or just texting in between classes.

While a lot of the advances have been beneficial to college students, it might be a good idea to take some time away from gadgets and relax.

Technology has changed the way we live and interact with each other. In recent years, the advent of smart phones, iPads and MP3 players has resulted in people becoming so very connected to technology. New advances in technology has led some to feel nonfunctional without technology.

While these devices that are now common are great and can help people connect to others and increase knowledge, it is good to also spend time away from such technology.

A lot of enjoyment can come from sitting down and reading a book, or turning off your phone and going for a walk. Taking breaks from electronic distractions can give students a chance to let their minds relax and can help them focus more on school and studies.

Oftentimes when students study for classes, they are also on Facebook, listening to music or texting. These distractions don’t help them retain information and can hurt their ability to concentrate on what is important. Students might find they can concentrate better and understand what they study a lot better if they turn off their phones or MP3 players.

Another technological thing that can suck people’s time is video games. While they are fun and can act as a nice way to relax, if taken too seriously, they can become a serious problem. Some people can become so engulfed in video games that they lose sight of things that are truly important to them. Video games can also damage social interactions. They can limit the time people interact with others.

The increase in the available amount of technology isn’t all bad. There have been many great advances that have made our lives easier. No one would argue that cell phones and computers don’t improve lives. They have made it easier to talk to each other and receive information. It has also increased the information that is available.

It might be hard for anyone to completely cut out technology from their lives, and most people wouldn’t want to, but it might be beneficial to take time from your day and take a break from electronics. A break from technology could open up a whole new world to people. Students who take a break from the electronic world might also find new interests and see improvements in their studying.

The advances that we have seen in our lifetimes are great and can do a lot to improve our lives, but we should remember that taking time away from such distractions can also be beneficial and help us to be happier.

Next time you find yourself with a few hours to kill, instead of sitting down in front of your Xbox, pick up a book, or go for a walk and take a break from technology.
