Kylie Jones, driver of the red Mazda involved in the accident on Thursday, Sept. 13, has been cited for an improper U-turn, which resulted in the crash that landed bicyclist Jordan Faas in the hospital.

According to campus police, there has not been an accident involving a vehicle and bicyclist or pedestrian in more than 12 months. Since May 1, there are have been 35 vehicle accidents on campus, averaging seven per month. Campus police said they want to remind everyone driving, biking and walking on campus to slow down, drive defensively and be safe.

After arriving home from the hospital and receiving facial surgery, WSU hockey club vice president Faas said he is just glad to be alive. When asked how he was doing, Faas jokingly said,

“Like I got hit by a car,” Faas said. “The glass ripped off all the skin on my scalp.”

Whiplash is his main concern now, since Faas can’t even sit up or move his body on his own. With his fiancée by his side taking care of him, Faas said he is going to watch every hockey game on his laptop, and cheer on the Wildcats from his bed. The coaches and trainers are going to text him updates until he fully recovers.

Faas is from Temecula, Calif., where, according to him, the area is more bicyclist-friendly.

“California is really cycle-friendly. I’m used to having good people on the road,” Faas said. “I just won’t ride my bike again in Utah.”

According to Faas, he was only traveling a quarter mile from the parking lot to his class on his 10-speed bicycle, which is why he wasn’t wearing a helmet. Faas said he has been biking for years and usually wears his helmet on his 60-mile trips with his other road bicycle. Faas said he is very fortunate to have hit the windshield with his head instead of the asphalt, he believes the injuries he would have sustained could have been worse.
