Ogden and WSU offer art galleries

Ogden offers many venues for movies, food, live music and live performances. One facet of Ogden that can also be explored is its art galleries. For those who might be looking for inexpensive entertainment, most of the art displays in Ogden are free to the public.

There are many places on the Weber State University campus to find art. The campus offers two galleries — the Mary Elizabeth Dee Shaw Gallery in the Browning Center and the Shepherd Union Gallery on the first floor of the Shepherd Union Building.

Currently, the Shaw Gallery is hosting the Biennial Faculty Exhibition, and the Shepherd Union Gallery is hosting works by members of the Lindquist family. The Shepherd Union Gallery will feature a new artist in October, and in December the Shaw Gallery will host the BFA Thesis Exhibition.

“We’ll have a new show in there (the Shepherd Union Gallery) in mid-October,” said Shepherd Union Gallery coordinator Nikki Nicholas. “We do two shows in the fall semester and then three or four in the spring. The artist’s name is Ruth Silver, so we’ll probably have the opening of her show at the beginning of November. It’s photography, but she’s doing some experimental stuff with it too; she’s using rose petals and things like that.”

The campus has several other spots to find works by students and outside artists. The halls of the Browning Center are where different art classes get to display their works, and currently the Shepherd Union Bridge Gallery is home to works by Rosalie Winard, a photographer working on a wetland birds project.

Along with the WSU galleries and displays, a number of art shows and galleries can also be found in downtown Ogden throughout the year. Historic 25th Street offers a number of places where art displays, art classes and the shops of local fashion designers can be found. Some places are dedicated solely to art, such as Gallery 25, the Myra Powell Gallery and Gallery 51 at the Union Station.

Gallery 25 is operated by 10 local artists. Gallery 51 changes its displays monthly and hosts a number of events. On Saturday, Sept. 29, the gallery will host a secret art auction featuring undisclosed local artists. The Myra Powell Gallery is home to the permanent work at the Union Station and also features exhibits of local artists.

Aside from these traditional gallery settings, a few businesses on 25th St. offer more than just art. As well as offering a variety of food and beverages, Grounds for Coffee offers a space for local artists to display their work each month. The Crowley Gallery and Cafe is also located on 25th St. Crowley sells antiques and art pieces, and has a lunch menu.

Also in Ogden, not far from 25th St., are Pintura Fine Arts on Washington Boulevard, the Eccles Community Art Center and Carriage House on Jefferson Avenue, and Bartholomew Gallery on 26th St.

Many of these galleries frequently change and offer new displays for the public. More information on these galleries is available at www.ogdencityarts.org.
