Playin' On Purple: Let's overload fan support this weekend

The Weber State University football and volleyball teams’ last home games are Saturday. For several athletes, it’s the end of an era. The least we can do is send them out with a bang.

There are people who have attended every single game, and then there are people who haven’t been to any games. Our football team may be having a rough season, but they still deserve support and fans.

Last weekend, senior and captain Anthony Morales of the football team was upset at the home crowd that left with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. I was working in the ticket booths, but my parents described the scene to me as a trail of ants marching out of the stadium. Little did these ants know, the Wildcats were about to fight for a solid finish. They had an amazing kick return, resulting in a touchdown, narrowing the final score deficit.

It’s the last home game for the footballers. They’ve worked hard all season. Although the final scores haven’t reflected their hard work, they still deserve to go out with a big bang (I may or may not have been watching “The Big Bang Theory” as I wrote that).

The volleyball team has had a rough couple of years. This year has been the best season it has had in a while. After covering volleyball for two years, I have come to discover it has the best crowd. The crowd yells and gets on its feet. The reason the crowd gets so into the matches is because the matches are actually very entertaining. It doesn’t matter if the team wins or loses — it will put on a good show for its fans. So why not go and let the team perform for you for its last home game? You won’t regret going, and the seniors deserve the support.

Plan your Saturday around WSU athletics. Football is at 1:30 p.m., and the volleyball game is at 7 p.m. Go out as students and a community and cheer on the Wildcats. Support the athletes who have represented not only WSU, but the Ogden community.
