Nathan's Notations: Thanksgiving football predicitions

My favorite Thanksgiving memories from when I was little are sitting around my grandma’s house after dinner and watching football.

I loved watching Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions. He was the most exciting player I’ve ever seen. The way he could avoid tacklers and the way he played the game was amazing. For those of you who were too young to remember watching him play, I feel sorry for you. Sanders was so hard to tackle, opponents accused him of covering his jersey in Crisco.

My older brother Chris was a huge Lions fan, and I would have been too if Chris had let me. For some reason, Chris didn’t want his little brother copying him, and made me pick another team to cheer for. Honestly, though, looking at how the Lions have fared over the years, I really should thank him for that.

This year, after eating more turkey and stuffing than I should, I’m looking forward to spending the rest of my Thursday in a food-induced lethargic state, watching football, so let’s look at the upcoming games.

The first game of the day will be the Houston Texans facing off against the Lions. The Lions are coming into this game with a 4-6 record and have had a bit of a letdown after last year. The Texans, on the other hand, are having a great season, having a 9-1 record. The only game Houston has lost this year is against the Green Bay Packers.

While I have a soft spot in my heart for the Lions, I think it’d be a pretty safe bet to say the Texans should get the win over the Lions.

The second game of the day has big rivalry implications for the two teams involved. The Washington Redskins are taking on the Dallas Cowboys. The Redskins haven’t had a great season and have a 4-6 record, but, with Robert Griffin III as their quarterback, I wouldn’t want to miss the game. RG3 has already proved to be an exciting player with huge potential. The Cowboys are coming into the game with a 5-5 record and will be looking to get a big win in a key NFC East matchup.

I think this should be a close game. Both teams are hungry for a win. While neither team has had a great season, you can throw all that out the window in rivalry games. I’m going to go out on a limb and say I think the Redskins are going to win this game. I think RG3 should have a big game as Washington takes a big win over the rival Cowboys.

The final game of the day will be the New England Patriots facing off against the New York Jets. I don’t think this will be much of a game and expect the Patriots to easily knock off the traveling circus that is the New York Jets this year.

It’s been a bad year for the Jets and their offense. I don’t see that changing against the 7-3 Patriots. I’d be pretty surprised if the Jets can figure out their offense and get a win against New England.

No matter what happens on Thursday, I’m sure I and thousands of others will be watching the games as we slowly recover from our Thanksgiving meal.
