Weber State University announced that Jody Sears will stay on as head football coach.

Weber State University Athletics announced today that Jody Sears is going to stay on as head coach of Wildcat football. Sears has signed a three-year contract. Sears also announced the hiring of Timm Rosenbach as the new offensive coordinator.

“Coach Sears was put into an unprecedented situation this past season and did a wonderful job of keeping our team together and leading the Wildcat football program,” said Jerry Bovee, athletic director at WSU.  “He did it with style and class, engaging the community and fans in a positive way, all while maintaining stability in our program.”

Bovee said Sears’ leadership helped the team compete each week even though it was in a difficult situation. The team had three different head coaches in a short time, and now Sears has the opportunity to build the program and get it back to competing for conference championships.

The 2012 season was Sears’ 19th season coaching football. Under Sears’ watch, WSU’s defense ranked third in the Big Sky for total defense in conference games. The Wildcats were also sixth in rushing defense and seventh in passing defense.

“I’m absolutely humbled, honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to coach and lead the football program at Weber State,” Sears said. “I love where our team is and the direction we are going, and I’m looking forward to growing the program in the seasons to come.”

Rosenbach will take over as offensive coordinator. Sears and Rosenbach played football together at Washington State University, where Rosenbach was an All-American quarterback. He spent the last season as offensive coordinator at the University of Montana and, before that, New Mexico State University and five years at Washington State as quarterback coach.

“I’ve known Coach Rosenbach for many years and know he will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our program,” Sears said.

Rosenbach said he is excited to be at WSU and thinks the program is headed in the right direction.

“I’m excited to be working with Coach Sears and looking forward to this opportunity at Weber State,” he said. “Jody and I go back a long ways, and it will be great to coach together.  Weber State has the program headed in the right direction, and there is a commitment to the program that I’m excited to be a part of.”

Bovee also said Rosenbach will be a nice addition to the program.

“By adding Coach Rosenbach and his experience on the offensive side of the ball, we are assembling a staff that I’m confident will continue to build the program and reach our ultimate goals,” he said. “It also maintains stability for our program and keeps us focused on academics and establishing a solid recruiting base.”

Sears is the 10th head football coach in WSU history.
