While most students were taking it easy over the winter break, the Weber State University women’s basketball team stayed busy, playing six games. However, the Wildcats were unable to get a win.

The first game for the Wildcats came on the road, whe

n they traveled to Laramie, Wyo., to take on the University of Wyoming. The Cowgirls came into the game playing well, with an 8-1 record, and the Wildcats couldn’t manage to win, falling 77-62. UW sophomore forward Kayla Woodward led the Cowgirls with 20 points and seven rebounds.

Freshman center Jalen Carpenter led the Wildcats with a career-high 13 points, and freshman forward Regina Okoye ended the game with nine points.

The Wildcats were hurt by a poor first-half performance and went into the break down by 17. The second half was much better for the Wildcats, who outscored the Cowgirls 35-33 in the half, but were unable to overcome the large halftime deficit.

The Wildcats outscored UW in the paint, 32-26, something the team has struggled with this year.

Following the loss, the Wildcats were blown out against the University of Arizona, losing 81-49 at home. Freshman Brittney Newcomb led WSU, scoring nearly half of the team’s points. She finished the game with 21 points in the loss. Fifteen of Newcomb’s points came from 3-point shots; she hit five in the game.

WSU turned the ball over 35 times. UA scored 32 points off of Wildcat turnovers.

The game against UA marked the end of WSU’s non-conference schedule. The Wildcats didn’t manage to get a win, but head coach Bethann Ord said she hopes the tough games have prepared her team to have more success in conference play.

“We had another tough preseason schedule against some very good opponents, which will be good preparation for the expanded Big Sky season,” she said.

The Wildcats stayed at home for their next game, taking on Eastern Washington University. The Wildcats once again fell victim in a lopsided game, losing 88-60. Sophomore guard Brianna Averette knocked down a career-high 15 points, and Okoye added 12 points, five steals and four assists for WSU.

WSU then took on the Portland State University Vikings and played better, but once again lost, falling 74-60. The Wildcats were in control for the first 30 minutes of the game, but midway through the second half, PSU produced a 17-0 run and took control of the game. WSU was unable to recover.

Carpenter had her best game of the season, with 24 points and 14 rebounds. The double-double was her second of the season. She went for 14 points and 11 rebounds against Utah Valley University.

The Wildcats then traveled to the University of Northern Colorado, hoping to build off of the last game. But WSU fell flat, losing 69-48.

The Wildcats wrapped up their games over the break on Saturday on the road against the University of North Dakota. They once again suffered a large defeat, losing 73-49. The Wildcats’ bench was outscored by UND’s 45-17.

UND was led by freshman Mia Lloyd, who scored 15 points, but UND had three other players in double figures.

Kia Rhodes led WSU. Rhodes, one of two seniors on the team, finished with 14 points, tying a career-high.

Freshman guard Des Ramos was the only other Wildcat in double figures. Ramos finished with 11 points, going 2-for-7 from 3-point range.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday when they face off against Southern Utah University at the Dee Events Center.
