The Weber State University women’s basketball team fell to the Idaho State University Bengals at home on Monday night, 69-45.

ISU had three players in double digits, including the game’s leading scorer, Kaela Oakes, who had 17 points. The Bengals’ Ashleigh Vella had 16 points, and Jessa Jeppesen had 10 points.

Despite the loss, head coach Bethann Ord said she saw some good things from her team and that she feels it is making improvements.

“We showed some growth in all aspects of our game,” Ord said. “We are still trying to put together 40 minutes of basketball.”

WSU freshman center Jalen Carpenter had 10 points. Carpenter was also the Wildcats’ highest rebounder with eight. Regina Okoye and Kalie Matthews each added seven rebounds for the Wildcats. Despite the Wildcats’ high rebounding numbers, the leading rebounder went to ISU’s Abyee Marcigan, who pulled down nine rebounds. The Bengals ended up out-rebounding the Wildcats 44-34.

The Wildcats only shot 30 percent, while the Bengals shot 44 percent from the field. From 3-point range, ISU shot 47 percent, hitting a total of eight threes. ISU’s Oakes and WSU’s Brittney Newcomb had the most 3-pointers with three each. WSU shot 33 percent from beyond the arc, going 5-of-15.

The Bengals outscored the Wildcats 30-16 in the key. ISU also recorded 19 points off of the 12 Wildcat turnovers. The Wildcats only scored three points from the Bengals’ 12 turnovers.

One of the biggest differences in the game was where the Bengals outscored the Wildcats, 30-16. Another big scoring differential came on points off of turnovers. ISU recorded 19 points off of 12 Wildcat turnovers, while the Wildcats only scored three points off of 12 Bengal turnovers.

ISU had nine steals, and WSU had eight. ISU had six points off of a second chance, four from fast breaks and 21 from the bench. WSU only had eight points off of second chances, none from fast breaks and 12 from the bench.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Thursday night at Northern Arizona University at 7 p.m.
