Men's tennis gets first win of season

The Weber State University men’s tennis team fell to 0-2 on Saturday with a 6-1 loss against the University of Utah at the Eccles Tennis Center, then secured its first win of the season against Idaho State University.

WSU started out well and claimed the first point of the tournament in the doubles matches. Oliver Good and Caio Poitena defeated Alejandro Medinilla and Cedric Willems 8-3, and Ryan Garner and Anthony Trabert knocked off Rafael Davidian and Mamedor Dmytro to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.

However, the Utes came storming back in singles play. They swept the singles matches, winning all six.

Things improved for the Wildcats the following day when they got their first win of the season against rival ISU. The 4-3 win was not only the first win of the season for WSU, but the first career win for new head coach Brad Ferreira.

Another first occurred for WSU. Freshman Jakub Gewert secured a crucial point in his first collegiate singles win.

WSU’s doubles team was once again strong. The Wildcats swept the three doubles matches, and the Wildcats and Bengals split the singles matches, with each team winning three.

Poitena earned the winning point for WSU in a three-set victory over ISU’s Andres Coello. Coello jumped out to an early lead, winning the first set 6-1, but Poitena fought back, winning the second set 6-4 and taking the third and deciding set 6-2.

Now WSU will have a break until February, when it will head to Logan to face off against Utah State University. After playing USU, the Wildcats will return to Ogden for a stretch of five matches at home.
