The Weber State University women’s basketball team lost a blowout game to the No. 1 University of Montana Grizzlies on Thursday night by a score of 90-43.
In the first game between these two teams, WSU was just edged out by UM, losing by the score of 61-53. The Wildcats had a strong defensive effort, which kept them in the game.
UM senior Kenzie De Boer got off to a quick start, scoring the first six points. The Grizzlies got up 9-0 after three minutes, until freshman Kalie Matthews got the Wildcats on the board.
UM shot lights out to start the game, getting up to a 20-4 lead after seven minutes, while shooting more than 80 percent from the field and going 3-3 from the 3-point line.
UM eventually cooled down a little from the field, but still shot a high percentage off of good transition offense and layups.
The Wildcats had a tough shooting half and were unable to stop the UM offense as well, which didn’t spell good things for WSU. The Wildcats trailed at the half 48-23.
The story of the first half was field goal percentage and rebounding. The Wildcats shot just 27 percent from the field in the first half, while the Grizzlies shot 58 percent from the field. The Wildcats were also dominated on the boards, being out-rebounded 26-11 and outscored 12-0 on second-chance points.
De Boer led all scorers in the half with 11 points. Senior Katie Baker added eight points and five rebounds for the Grizzlies.
Junior Brittney Newcomb led the Wildcats with six points, all of them coming from the 3-point line. Freshman Jalen Carpenter added four points and four rebounds for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats came out playing more competitively to start the second half, keeping pace with the Grizzlies for the first few minutes.
But the Wildcats continued their shooting woes, while the Grizzlies continued to shoot well from the field, getting a lot of high-percentage shots to fall, leading by as many as 47.
De Boer led all scorers with 19 points. Baker recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Every player for the Grizzlies scored in the game.
Newcomb led the Wildcats with 10 points. Sophomore Carlee Lough added seven points.
The Grizzlies finished shooting 45 percent from the field, while shooting 6-12 from the 3-point line in the second half. The Wildcats ended shooting just 24 percent from the field. UM dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Wildcats 57-31 and outscoring them 19-3 on second-chance points. The Wildcats were also outscored 19-6 on points off turnovers.
The Wildcats will stay in Montana for a matchup against the Montana State University Bobcats. The Bobcats have had troubles of late, falling from the top spot in the conference after dropping six straight games. The game will be on Saturday at 2 p.m.

“We went up against a great shooting team, they’re first place in the league,” said Coach Bethann Ord. “It’s a tough place to play, you knew they weren’t going to just lay down for us, especially the way we played them at our place. They are a really good team. “

“Again, we’re going into a tough place to play,” said Coach Ord. “Montana State is a very good team as well. Again, we gotta do the little things like rebounding, that’s what’s killing us. We gotta do a better job knocking down our shots, playing as a team. And rebounding the basketball, finishing.”
In their last meeting, Weber State lost to the Bobcats 67-37.
