The Weber State University softball team won both games in its doubleheader against the University of Great Falls Argonauts on Tuesday afternoon.

In the first game, pitcher Morgan Allaband pitched a shutout, giving up just three hits and striking out nine batters. The Wildcats won 7-0.

After getting three straight outs on defense, the Wildcats drove in four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning.

After getting two outs, junior Brooke Silva got the scoring going with a home run. Then, after two Wildcat singles to left field, freshman Brooke Ford drove in two runs on a double to left. Ford later scored on an error.

Silva added to her RBI count in the second inning, driving in senior London Clarke on a single.

Silva added an RBI in the fourth inning. She finished 3-4 with one run scored and three runs batted in.

After three and two-thirds innings, UGF pulled pitcher Keeley Van Blaricom in favor of Brittani Clifford. She pitched a perfect two-and-a-third innings, giving up no hits and four strikeouts.

The Wildcats had eight hits and no errors in the game. The Argonauts had three hits and had four errors.

“Morgan had a great pitching day today; she had nine strikeouts,” said head coach Tina Johnson. “That was huge for her. One of the best outings she has had in a while — I think for this season, actually. So that builds her confidence.”

In the second game, the Wildcats won in six innings by the score of 12-4.

After the Wildcats scored in the first inning, the Argonauts got on the board in the second inning with a home run off the bat of freshman Regan Rucks.

WSU retook the lead in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, freshman Alyson Kulp drove in two runs for the Wildcats with a single that slipped past the second baseman into center field.

The Wildcats gave up two runs in top of fifth, tying score at 4-4.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ford hit a standup triple with the bases loaded, driving in three runs, which gave the Wildcats the lead for good.

The Wildcats drove in four more runs in the sixth inning, giving them an eight-run lead, resulting in the game being called.

Ford went 3-4 with two runs scored and five runs batted in. Freshman Krystin Kubo finished 2-3 with two RBIs, and Kulp had one run scored and two RBIs on four hits.

“It was good for us to get out and build our confidence,” Johnson said. “We’re starting to hit the ball much better, more consistently. Defensively, we made a lot better plays. This is a real big confidence-builder for us, just what we need going into the weekend.”

The Wildcats will return to Big Sky play on Friday against the Portland State University Vikings.

“Portland State has been at the top of the PCSC, which was the conference we were in last year,” Johnson said. “It’s nice because we have played them on the road the last couple years. It will be nice to have them here in our yard, because their field is a lot different than ours. The air is a lot different there. It’s heavy. It’s hard to hit the ball out there. We are really excited to face them. They are a quality ball club, and we’re gonna have to have our A-game. I believe if we have our A-game, we can match up with anybody.”

The Wildcats will play a doubleheader on Friday, with games at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Wildcats will finish up the three-game series on Saturday at 12 p.m. All the games will be held on the Wildcat Softball Field.
