Weber State University’s baseball club went 2-1 over the weekend against the University of Utah’s baseball club at the Lindquist Field in Ogden.
The Wildcats won the first and last game of a tripleheader on Friday. It was the first time either team has played three games in one day.
In the first game, WSU cruised to a 9-1 win over the Utes. Scooter Cisneros said that throughout the three games, the Wildcats played good defense, had solid pitching and were backed by good hitting performances. Cisneros said Anthony Rojas in particular had a strong three games at the plate.
“Anthony Rojas played extremely well, had two inside-the-park home runs in one game,” Cisneros said. “He had eight RBIs too over the weekend.”
The Utes took the second game for their first win of the season. Troy Romney pitched a complete game for the Utes. He gave up three runs, but was able to hold on for a 6-4 win, thanks to solid batting from the Utes.
For the Wildcats, Dylan Wold was on the mound in the second game. Despite the Wildcats not winning the game, Cisneros said Wold pitched well and had a strong game.
“Dylan Wold had six strikeouts and got a bunch of batters to hit into ground out,” Cisneros said.
In the third game, the Wildcats bounced back and had a strong game at the plate. WSU racked up 16 runs in the game, cruising to a 16-6 win.
Cisneros played well in the third game for WSU. He said it felt good to have a solid performance after struggling in the first two games.
“I struggled a little bit the first couple of games, but (in) the third game, I made up for it,” Cisneros said. “I ended up not getting out, and got a couple of good hits and stole a base.”
Now the Wildcats will head on the road to Montana. Next week, WSU will continue conference play against Montana State University.
“We should do well,” Cisneros said. “I think we’re in conference-play shape; we’re all ready to go. Our pitchers’ arms are looking good and they’re throwing hard.”
WSU will work toward qualifying for the regional tournament at the end of the season. The top team from the conference will get to play in a regional tournament. Currently, the Wildcats will need to finish their season strong in order to have a chance at playing in the regional tournament.
“We’ll have to win all the rest of our games to even qualify for the tournament,” Cisneros said. “They take the teams with the best record, and we’ll play against the teams from Washington, Oregon and other states in our region.”
While the team will need to have a great finish to the season, Cisneros said he is confident they are capable of winning their remaining games and that he hopes to have the chance to play in the regional tournament.
“As long as we kick in our focus and play with our heads, we should win out the rest of the season,” Cisneros said.
