Geek in Gear: Have some fun this Halloween

I should probably spend today’s column talking about Pokemon, since that’s most likely the geekiest current news topic. But it’s flooded my Tumblr dashboard, Facebook wall and gaming group chat box to the point that I need a break from it, so we’re sticking with an October-themed topic instead. Last week was all about how to look snazzy. Well, you might look fabulous in your costume, but that’s no fun if you have nowhere to go.

First, let’s start off by saying that you should under no circumstances be doing anything illegal to get your Halloween kicks. That means no breaking into abandoned buildings, no spending the night running through the cemeteries and no killing evil-looking monsters unless they try to kill you first. And if you do wear your costume into a business or Halloween attraction, make sure you aren’t breaking (or seem to be breaking) any rules. I can tell you right now that there are many establishments that wouldn’t appreciate me browsing the pasta aisle in full armor with a realistic-looking toy gun and knife. And I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t show up to school channeling recent Miley Cyrus fashion. These kinds of things might ruin your holiday, folks.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about some fun, legal ways to get the most out of the Halloween season.

1. Corn mazes. Some people might complain that there’s nothing to do in Ogden, but I disagree. If you drive around a little, you’re sure to come across a vast field of dying cornstalks brimming with blood-soaked chainsaw murderers and that kid next door you always thought was a little crazy. For anyone new to this concept, after harvest season, many farmers convert their cornfields into giant mazes, often filling them with the aforementioned creeps to give attendees a good scare. You pretty much wander around a maze of corn and wait for something to pop out and start chasing you. And hopefully they’re zombies and not aliens.

2. Haunted attractions. Besides corn mazes, which are often considered haunted in their own right, there are haunted houses and, locally, haunted forests. Utah has a lot of classics that tend to draw the crowds throughout the season. There’s Castle of Chaos, Nightmare on 13th, Fear Factory and a bunch of others. The level of haunting varies according to location. Some are simple jump-and-shock walk-throughs, while others, like the Castle of Chaos’ Hands-on Horror option, require signed waivers for their creatures to poke and prod you. You know, to make it realistic.

3. Zombies. Ah yes, zombies. Utah plays hosts to various zombie crawls and runs. Some are family-friendly, while others are all-out runs for your life. For example, there’s the 2013 Ogden Zombie Crawl, followed by a fun carnival for the kids. It’s for charity, too, so that’s even better. However, if running with or as a zombie isn’t your slice of pumpkin pie, then you may as well shoot them. Haunted Forest Zombie WarZ lets attendees hop on a truck and pelt zombies with paint balls. Yes, real zombies. That move. And groan. And apparently enjoy spending the Halloween season covered in paint.

4. Frightmares. There’s always Lagoon, of course. While it’s not quite the level of haunted amusement parks you’d find in, say, California, it’s a fun atmosphere in its own right.

5. Parties. Or, you know, you could just host your own party (or coerce your friends to do it). You’re almost guaranteed to be able to wear your costume to these. Sometimes, your job might host one, too, and we all know how fun it is to show off to co-workers. Besides that, the best part of parties is probably the treats that come along with it. While many of us might consider ourselves too old (or too lazy, or too cold) to go trick-or-treating, there’s nothing like a party to load up on all the tasty Halloween treats.

Whatever you choose to do this Halloween season, have some fun. October is the start of the holiday rush, and it’s a great excuse to take a break after midterms and gear up for the rest of the semester. It’s a time to touch bases with friends and family. Nothing quite brings people together like getting scared solid or limping downtown covered in blood and gore. Get out there and enjoy some Halloween spirit, Wildcats.
