Utah legislative roundup (news brief)

The Utah State Senate and House of Representatives passed House Bill 45 on Feb. 21, removing the 12-month waiting period for military service members to qualify for in-state tuition. HB45 now waits for Gov. Gary Herbert’s signature before it can become law.

Herbert will also look at Senate Bill 0041, which moves to change the state tree from the blue spruce to the quaking aspen, found to be more prominent in Utah.

House Bill 71 passed the house last week and has now been given a favorable recommendation from the senate to bring it before a full vote this session. The bill would make it illegal in the state of Utah to distribute intimate images of an individual without his or her consent and with “intent to cause emotional distress or harm.”

Senate Bill 36 passed through the Senate, but needs to receive a favorable recommendation from the House Government Operations Committee in order to be voted on this session. This bill protects voter registration information from being sold or used for commercial purposes.
