While some students will be traveling for Spring Break — such as Parker DeYoung, a junior in engineering who will go to St. George and Las Vegas with friends — many students will be staying in Ogden, relaxing or working.
For the students who will be sticking around, Ogden will be the site of several events during Spring Break.
March 10 at 6:30 p.m. will be an intermediate digital photography class with John Hampton at the Eccles Community Art Center. Signup is required for this event.
On the same day, 4-5 p.m., the Ice Sheet will host an event called Stick and Puck for all ages.
March 11 at 5 p.m., the Golden Spike Event Center will host the Utah Youth Rodeo, and the Outlaw Saloon will host a free poker night, 7-10 p.m.
The Ogden Nature Center will host Wild Wednesday with the theme of “Going Green” to fit in with St. Patrick’s Day on March 12 at 3:45 p.m. The center recommends coming dressed in green, though it is not mandatory. There will be a scavenger hunt for all things green, and there is always the opportunity to see the animals that live at the center, such as eagles, hawks, snakes and owls. The event costs $4 for adults and $2 for children.
Also on March 12, there will be the National Barrel Horse Association’s barrel riding competition at the Golden Spike Arena, starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.
Students who may not be interested in the rodeo can go to the Union Station on March 12 for the weekly Jazz at the Station event that starts at 7 p.m. This event is also free.
On March 13, the Eccles Community Art Center will host four different events. Students and community members may sign up for Adult Tai Chi at 9:30 a.m, Adult Open Studio at 11 a.m., Basic Iyengar Yoga at 5:30 p.m. or Twilight Iyengar Yoga at 6:30 p.m.
On March 14 at 10 am, there will be a bridal fair at the Golden Spike Event Center, and at 7 p.m., there will be a Garbage Nation Movie Night at the Ogden Nature Center Education Building. Also at 7 p.m., Peery’s Egyptian Theater will show “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” The screening costs $6 to get in, or $5 with a can of food.
Although Kassidy Taylor, a Weber State University sophomore, and Trae Boman, a junior in geology, will stay in town to work during Spring Break, they both expressed interest in the film screening at Peery’s Egyptian Theater.
Students wanting to relax, volunteer or get caught up in their classes will also have options available to come to campus during Spring Break.
The Center for Community Engaged Learning will host various events on campus next week. March 13 is the Latinos in Action Conference. The CCEL is looking for volunteers who can help escort students to different sessions, register participants and make sure lunch runs smoothly.
The Dental Hygiene Clinic on campus is also looking for bilingual students to volunteer as translators. Interested students can contact the clinic at 801-626-6131.
Ogden has many outdoor spots that offer activities such as camping, hiking and biking. Freecampsites.net has a list of free camping spots in and around Ogden. Everytrail.com offers not only a list of hiking and biking trails, but also gives detailed trail maps and descriptions, along with guides and points of interest. Daniel Lenhart, a freshman studying zoology, plans to take advantage by going camping for Spring Break.
Students needing a quiet place to study or get caught up on schoolwork during Spring Break can still go to the Stewart Library. The library will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be closed on the weekend, and regular hours will resume March 17.
The Testing Center will also be open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The center will be closed on the weekend during Spring Break.
