Berry selected for pre-NBA draft tournament

Weber State University men’s basketball senior Davion Berry was selected to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament this week in Portsmouth, Va. Berry is one of 64 seniors around the country invited to the tournament, which is one of the top pre-draft tournaments in the nation.

The 62nd annual Portsmouth Invitational will run April 16-19, and will be played in front of representatives of every NBA team and numerous international leagues.

Berry is the only player from a school in Utah invited to this year’s tournament. He is one of three players from the Big Sky Conference in this year’s field, joining Kareem Jamar of the University of Montana and Troy Huff of the University of North Dakota.

WSU Athletics year in review

As another academic year comes to an end, so too does the 2013-14 season for a majority of the sports at Weber State University. But WSU athletes have a lot of hardware to show off.

First was the WSU women’s soccer team, which finished in third place during the regular season but pulled through in the Big Sky Conference Championship Tournament, knocking out the top-seeded Portland State University Vikings to win its fourth Big Sky Championship. The Wildcats appeared in the  NCAA Women’s College Cup, losing to Brigham Young University in the first round.

WSU’s football and volleyball teams struggled for the second-straight year. The volleyball team showed marked improvement toward the end of the season, but was unable to improve its record from a season ago. The football team also was unable to improve its record, which prompted the hire of Jay Hill as its new head coach.

The men’s basketball team won its record 21st Big Sky Championship. The Wildcats went on to win their postseason tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost by nine points to the University of Arizona.

The WSU women’s basketball team bounced back from a winless 2012-13 season to post seven wins, including its first Big Sky road win in four years.

WSU women’s cross-country won its third consecutive Big Sky Championship. Men’s tennis also won the Big Sky regular-season title this past week.

WSU softball has already won more games than it did last season, and WSU’s track and field teams have had strong showings thus far in their seasons.
