Summer has always been a popular time to go see movies, especially the big blockbuster hits. This summer provided a wide range of movies for audiences to choose from. Some of them were big hits, but unfortunately others missed the mark.

According to Don Child, assistant manager at Cinepoint 6, many movies turned out to be hits. Those included were “Maleficent,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Divergent” and “22 Jump Street.”

Mitch Marsden, manager of the MovieGrille, added that “Edge of Tomorrow,” “Blended” and “Neighbors” also did quite well. Jordyn Johnson, general manger of Walker Cinemas, noted that “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Rio 2” did not disappoint. It is clear that some movies were successful this summer at the box office.

Along with those movies that did well, there were some that did not do as well. Child said that the movie industry this summer was “down 20 percent from last summer.” According to Child, it is due to the fact that  movie studios simply failed to deliver the goods.

Johnson mentioned a few of the movies that did not do well this summer, namely “Transcendence,” “Brick Mansions” and “The Other Woman.” She also mentioned how last summer had more to offer with bigger and better movies.

Child mentioned that “Sex Tape,” “The Expendables 3” and the recent remake of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” fell short, and Mitch Marsden added the sports films “Million Dollar Arm” and “Draft Day” also disappointed him.

Cydnee Green, WSU student studying forensic science, said her favorite films from this summer were “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars.”

“Shailene Woodley is by far my favorite actress,” Green said. “It was so awesome to see her play two completely different roles within months of each other.”

Child said “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” was his favorite. Child said this was because the movie was as good as he hoped it to be and also had a good story. Johnson enjoyed “How to Train Your Dragon 2.” She said she liked the fact that, “(Dragon) wasn’t just a good movie for kids but also for adults.”

Mitch Marsden really liked “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” He said it was a lot better than the first one, and that it simply had a better story than its predecessor.

Many films this summer either left the audience disappointed or exceeded expectations. We can only hope that next summer brings even bigger movies to the big screen.
