Students will have a chance to join the reigning Big Sky champion Weber State men’s basketball team this Saturday, as the Wildcats hold tryouts for a walk-on spot on the team’s 2014-15 roster.

In order to be eligible to try out, participants must be full-time students (enrolled in 12 credit hours) and must also bring physical and insurance information to the Weber State Athletics Compliance Office located at Stewart Stadium prior to the tryouts on Saturday. Students will not be allowed to try out without completing the paperwork at the Compliance Office beforehand.

The tryouts will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Dee Events Center, but participants are asked to show up 15 minutes beforehand to sign in and register. Participants will be put through several warm ups and drills throughout the session.

“We’ll put them through a warm-up, like our normal players would go through. Then we put them through drill work, just to see where they’re at with all of their skills,” said Weber State Director of Basketball Operations David Moats. “Then they’ll play depending on (the number of participants) . . . and just get a feel of them that way. Then, depending on what we see specifically from some of the players, we might put them through more drills and work after. Just try and see what will fit our team.”

The coaching staff will be at the tryouts to evaluate the participants to see if anybody will be a fit with the team, and Moats says that some of the players already on the roster might show up also.

“Player-wise, there might be some that show up, but they won’t play with (the tryouts),” Moats said. “Some might be around just to give us their opinion (on the tryouts).”

Moats said that the team is looking for players at this tryout to fill out a practice squad that could have the potential to become scholarship players.

“We’re looking for about three to four guys,” he said. “Three to four guys would be perfect. Guards and (centers).”

There have been players in recent years that were successful in open tryouts, and made the team. Most recently, men’s basketball player Jordan Brown made the team as a walk on through the open tryouts. According to Director of Athletic Communications Paul Grua, Brown has since moved up to become a scholarship athlete with the team.

The Wildcats will open their season with two exhibition games, the first taking place on Nov. 1 against St. Katherine. The Weber State regular season schedule kicks off on the road on Nov. 14 at Utah State.
