LTE: A solution for everyone

Smoking is a controversial issue on campus today. The majority of students who walk from class to class often find themselves inhaling secondhand smoke. However, smoking is a legal recreational activity for anyone to participate in.

Those who want to smoke on campus can, and it is their right. But for those of us who do not partake in the recreational and health-damaging activity, how can we shield ourselves from the noxious secondhand smoke? The solution is compromise.

As many have seen, the Lagoon theme park has designated smoke areas. These areas are convenient to reach, yet distant enough to not affect bystanders. These designated smoking pavilions have two benches back-to-back, which can seat up to three to four people on each side comfortably. Over the two benches is a small roof to cover both benches completely with a sign attached that reads, “smoke and sit station.” These stations, which have been conveniently placed throughout the park, are used frequently.

This is the solution that we need here at Weber State University. This is a solution that allows everyone to win. Funding for these “smoke and sit stations” could come from fundraisers and/or perhaps a grant that the university or the health promotion program could obtain.
