The Weber State men’s basketball team went on the road last week to face Northern Arizona and Southern Utah and came away with a win and a loss.
On Thursday night the team was in Flagstaff where they faced off against the NAU Lumberjacks. After a close first half, the Wildcats took the lead and never looked back winning 74-65.
“This was a really tough physical game and I thought we really held our composure,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “We knew they would make some runs but we were able to withstand those. Our team had a good look in their eyes tonight and really played tough.”
Jeremy Senglin scored a career-high 25 points, shooting 5-11 from the field, and 3-6 from the 3-point line. He was also 12 for 15 from the foul line and recorded five assists and two steals. Joel Bolomboy recorded his sixth double-double of the season in the win, scoring 16 points (7-14 from the field and 2-3 from the foul line) and pulling down 12 rebounds.
The team followed up the winning performance against NAU with a 10-point loss at Southern Utah on Saturday. Despite coming in with a three-game winning streak, the team fell to the Thunderbirds 70-60 for the Wildcats’ first loss to Southern Utah in eight years.
After a back-and-forth game with both teams changing the lead nine times, SUU took the lead with 12 minutes left in the game and didn’t falter as they cruised to victory.
“We got beat and outplayed tonight by Southern Utah and we didn’t match their intensity and edge,” Rahe said. “You have to give Southern Utah all the credit. We weren’t able to get stops and we didn’t have the toughness that we needed.”
Richaud Gittens led the team in scoring with 18 points in the loss. He shot 6-7 from the field and 3-3 from behind the arc. Senglin added 14 points, with 12 points coming from free-throws.
The Wildcats now sit at 8-9 on the season (3-3 in conference) and returns home this week to face Portland State on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Sacramento State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
