The Annual Student Art Exhibition is currently going on in the Kimball Visual Arts Building until Feb. 20. and is free to view to the public. The gallery shows a range of artwork from students including photography, videography, paintings and sculptures.

Jaqualine  Crabtree, mixed media junior, said people should come to the gallery because, “It  has a great variety of pieces and it is not set one particular set of interest.”

According to Lydia Gravis, director of the Mary Elizabeth Dee Shaw Gallery, “142 pieces were entered into the show but only 45 were accepted.”

With the diversity seen between art pieces, Gravis feels what sets this show apart from others is the high quality of work presented in the exhibit.

“Its a high caliber show because it is an exhibition so not everything gets in,” Gravis said.

Crabtree explained that to enter the competition, she had to fill out paperwork and pay a small entry fee for each piece she entered. After filling out paperwork and taking care of the fees, Crabtree explained her pieces are given to a panel of jurors who decide which pieces will be featured in the exhibition. One of the guest artists who helped select the pieces was famous illustrator and artist Calef Brown. After the pieces were selected, it was then Gravis’s job to design the exhibition with the pieces selected.

Many of the pieces featured in the exhibit took the artist a significant amount to time to produce. Photography senior Katherine Johnson’s photography piece “Collateral Patterns,” a collection of black and white photos, took her several months to complete.

“It took a good chunk of last semester,” Johnson said. “I am planner.”

Johnson said her artwork is often an expression of her own emotions. She explained working on some of her pieces can be very cathartic and helped her sort through personal issues.

Crabtree explained that unlike many other types of art that are one singular medium, mixed media can include anything the artist thinks will artistically add to a piece.

Gravis and Johnson encouraged students to come to the exhibition and enjoy the art that their fellow students have created. One piece in particular Gravis and Johnson said students should take interest in a video entitled “Away” by Katie Poreman.

“It won best of show, but it is a well-crafted video and I just thought she did well of keeping the audience’s attention for the duration of the video,” Gravis said.

The Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition will be featured in the Shaw Gallery of the Kimball Visual Arts Building until Feb. 20th. The Shaw Gallery is just inside the Kimball Visual Arts building on the west side of the main lobby. Free of cost, the Shaw Gallery  is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday noon to 5 p.m.
