Men’s basketball drops both home matches
Despite tough play, the men’s basketball team suffered two losses at home this past week, falling to 10-14 on the season (5-8 Big Sky conference).
On Thursday they faced off against in state rival Southern Utah University, where despite a late rally the Wildcats fell to the Thunderbirds 65-56. The team was not able to get much going for them, shooting 27 percent from the field and were 5-26 from the three-point line. Chris Golden and Richaud Gittens both scored 13 points on the night.
The Wildcats suffered another loss on Thursday, as WSU leading scorer Jeremy Senglin suffered a broken jaw and was ruled out for the next four weeks.
On Saturday the team faced off against Northern Arizona University, where they were unable to hold on after a late comeback attempt and fell 61-54. Junior Joel Bolomboy had a career night, scoring 23 points and grabbing a season high 17 rebounds. During the final stretch of the game, the team was able to tie it up 47-47 with 2:58 left in the game. SUU then went on a 6-0 run to finish the game, handing the Wildcats their 14th loss of the season.
The Wildcats head out on the road one last time this season, as they play at Montana State University on Thursday and at University of Montana on Saturday.
Women’s basketball splits road trip
The women’s team went on the road last week, making stops at Southern Utah and Northern Arizona, where they moved to 11-13 on the season (6-7 Big Sky).
Their first stop had them at SUU where they came out of halftime with a 26-23 lead and never looked back as they won 50-48. Junior Jalen Carpenter led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds and senior Carlee Lough added 11 points and a career high three steals.
The second stop on the trip had the Wildcats in Flagstaff to take on the Lumberjacks where they saw a three-game winning streak come to an end as they lost 56-52. Jalen Carpenter and Carlee Lough both scored in the double digits with 16 points and 12 points respectively and Regina Okoye added five steals to her record. The team will return home this week for their final two home games of the season against Montana State and Montana.
Track and Field to host Weber State Invitational this week
The Weber State track and field team will be hosting their annual Wildcat Indoor Open this Thursday and Saturday. Teams from all around the region have been invited to participate. On Thursday the shot put and weight throw events will take place at the Golden Spike Arena at the Weber County Fairgrounds, with the rest of the events taking place at the Swenson Multi-Purpose Center on Saturday. Admission is free for the public.
The Salt Lake Bees are offering a student package deal for the 2015 season. All students in the state of Utah with a valid student ID can purchase the package which for $50 buys you a ticket to all 72 home games. General admission tickets normally start at $10.
