The Weber State University softball team came away with two wins and three losses at the Troy Cox Classic over the weekend in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The Wildcats started off their season by just missing a school record for hits in a game, totaling 16 hits in a 11-0 victory over Bradley University. Weber State tied the record in their rematch with Bradley the next day, when they recorded 17 hits in the 11-5 victory.

Despite sweeping the series against Bradley, the Wildcats suffered three losses to New Mexico State and Kansas University. The Wildcats played Kansas hard in both of their matches, but were unable to get a win against the undefeated Jayhawks.

“MaCauley (Flint) pitched well and both teams only had two hits,” said WSU head coach Mary Kay Amicone after the Wildcats’ first loss to the Jayhawks. “We had an opportunity in the sixth to score a couple of runs when Aubrey (Whitmer) hit a shot down the third-base line, but their third baseman made a great play.”

Flint, a senior right-handed pitcher, pitched well in both of her outings. She did not allow a hit through six innings against the Jayhawks and shut out the Bradley Braves in her first start of the season.

The great pitching continued for the Wildcats as freshman right-hander Bailey Seek allowed only two hits and struck out four. However, an inning filled with errors for the Wildcats allowed for a five-run rally for the Jayhawks and 6-3 victory.

Although the team faced adversity after two tough losses to Kansas they did not let that keep them down.

“The first lost to Kansas kind of pumped us up as a team. It brought us closer together and it showed when we played Bradley again,” said junior left fielder Rudi Barrios. “The losses to Kansas were tough to swallow but they only made us better as a team.”

The Wildcats (2-3) return to action again this weekend at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. Despite a rough tournament run last weekend, the team remains optimistic for the rest of the season.

“Every loss makes me want to work that much harder but I saw some great things from my team,” Flint said. “I’m excited to see what this season has in store for us. We have been working hard and will continue to get better and better to get things done this season.”
