Women’s basketball falls on the road to Bengals

Hoping to stop a three-game losing streak, the Weber State women’s basketball team saw its playoff hopes dwindle as they dropped a crucial road game to Idaho State University 63-56 on Saturday.

The Bengals quickly started off the game with a 9-0 lead and maintained the lead throughout the first half, going into halftime up 33-23. The Wildcats continued to trail throughout the second half and, despite going on a 12-3 run to pull within three points with less than a minute left in the game, they were unable to complete the comeback attempt.

Senior Zakiyyah Shahid-Martin led the Wildcats with 13 points and pulled down four rebounds. Freshman Jocelyn Adams scored eight points and pulled down four rebounds coming off the bench, while junior Jalen Carpenter recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Wildcats (11-16, 6-10 in conference) will wrap up their regular season schedule this week on the road at University of Idaho (12-15, 6-10) Thursday night and will face Eastern Washington University (17-10, 10-6) in the season finale on Saturday.

Track and field finishes sixth at Big Sky Championships

The WSU men’s and women’s track and field teams finished in sixth place at the Big Sky Conference Championships over the weekend to end the indoor season.

The Wildcats had eight athletes earn All-Conference honors—four from each team—and nine top-three finishes. On the women’s team, junior Jamie Stokes won her first career individual Big Sky title with a time of 4:57.77 in the mile run—six seconds faster than the next runner. Despite placing sixth in the event, sophomore Tawnie Moore broke her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.65 seconds.

Sophomore Anthony Gregory finished in second place in the high jump event with a height of 2.12 meters. The men’s team also saw success in the 4 x 400 meter relay, as freshman Dustin Durfee, junior Jason Diamond and seniors Stetson Smith and Isaac Akers combined for a third place finish with a time of 3:15.39.

The outdoor track and field season begins for the Wildcats on March 20 when they compete in the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Invitational.

Wildcats softball wins big at Louisville Slugger Invitational

The WSU softball team continued its early season success over the weekend as they picked up three more wins at the Louisville Slugger Invitational at Long Beach, California.

The Wildcats split their two games on the first day of competition, shutting out Utah Valley University 5-0 before losing a close game to Boise State University 9-8. WSU grabbed two more wins on Saturday with a 3-0 shutout over Seattle University in the morning and a 9-8 extra-innings victory over Long Beach State University.

Junior Alyson Kulp led the Wildcats offense, batting 7-17 with three runs batted in and seven runs scored. After being named Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Week, senior MaCauley Flint continued to dominate as she pitched two complete-game shutouts. In 14 innings, Flint struck out 14 batters, walked six and allowed eight hits as she lowered her season earned run average from 3.50 to 2.21.

The Wildcats (8-6) continue their season in Boise, Idaho this weekend as they compete in the Springhill Suites Invitational.
