Men’s and women’s basketball remain in playoff hunt

With only two games remaining in the regular season for the Weber State University men’s and women’s basketball teams, both teams are still hanging on to the chance to play in the Big Sky Conference Championships. With the women’s team in ninth place and the men’s team in eighth, both teams will play their final two games this week as they try to crack the eight-team tournament field.

The women’s team (11-16, 6-10) is still in the hunt for a playoff seed, but only just. The Wildcats are currently in a three-way tie for ninth place with University of Idaho and Southern Utah University and are two games behind No. 8 Montana State University (14-14, 8-9). However, if No. 6 Idaho State University and  No. 7 Northern Arizona University win their games on Thursday night and Montana State wins their final game on Saturday, the Wildcats will miss the playoffs. The Wildcats’ final two games of the year will be on the road as they travel to Idaho Thursday night and Eastern Washington University on Saturday.

The men’s team (12-15, 7-9) is currently hanging onto the No. 8 seed with a one game lead over SUU (9-18, 6-10). Their path to the conference championships is slightly more secure than the women’s team as they clinch a spot in the tournament with a win and a Southern Utah loss. The Wildcats still could miss the tournament though if they finish behind or tie with Southern Utah. Because the Thunderbirds won both of their matches against the Wildcats this season, they hold the tiebreaker over WSU in the event the two teams finish tied in the standings. The Wildcats will hope to clinch their ninth straight conference tournament appearance on Thursday night when they host the Idaho Vandals (13-14, 8-8). They finish up their season on Saturday when the Eastern Washington Eagles (21-8, 12-4) come to Ogden.
