Track and Field kicks off outdoor season in Las Vegas
The Weber State University track and field teams returned to action over the weekend for the first time since the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships last month.
At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Spring Classic, the Wildcats picked up five wins—two from the women’s team and three from the men’s team.
Sophomore Preston Johnson picked up the Wildcats’ first win of the weekend in the men’s 10,000-meter run, finishing with a time of 30:45.53. The men’s team performed particularly well in the event as junior Tip Worob and senior Mike Hardy finished in second and third place respectively.
The men’s 4 x 400-meter relay team picked up the win in their event with a time of 3:16.41, two seconds faster than the next team, while senior Trevor Ricks won the 1,500 meter run with a time of 3:52.50.
In the women’s competition, sophomore Hailey Whetten won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:35.71. The next fastest Wildcat was junior Amanda Ward, who finished fourth with a time of 17:49.80.
The women’s team dominated in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as sophomore Ellie Child won the event with a time of 10:46.23, while junior Alice Keller finished in second and freshman Paige Dillmore finished in third.
The Wildcats return to action Friday when they compete in the Utah Valley University Collegiate Invitational.
Men’s tennis top Grizzlies in close match
The Wildcats moved up to fifth place in the Big Sky Conference standings on Saturday as they picked up their fourth win in conference play against the University of Montana.
In doubles play, Weber State saw freshman Stefan Cooper and junior Sanjay Goswami win the No. 1 match 6-1, while freshman Hou-En Chen and junior Landon Barlow took the No. 3 match 6-2 to give the Wildcats the doubles point to begin the day.
Juniors Jakub Gewert and Todd Fought swept the No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches, while Barlow picked up his 12th-straight singles win with a three-set win in the No. 4 match against Victor Casadevall.
The Wildcats (8-9, 4-1 conference) head on the road to Montana for their next match, as they play at Montana State University (8-6, 6-1 conference) on Sunday.
