Cheap Weekly: New shows this weekend

4-9 orchesis_webBy this point of the semester students are usually in one of two positions: apathetic acceptance of existing grades or frantically trying to make up for lost points. Either way, the weekend is a great time to set aside a few hours and release the stress of impending finals through good food and good entertainment.

Weber State University’s “Orchesis: A Body in Motion”

Orchesis is WSU’s student dance organization. In this spring’s performance, student choreographers under the direction of professors Erik Stern and Adam Johnston will present original pieces as performed by fellow students as well as performers from the Moving Company, a designated WSU Center for Community Engaged Learning course. Students participating in the Moving Company not only get to express themselves through dance, they also have a chance to earn community service hours and have practical experience teaching a variety of students when they graduate.

“Orchesis: A Body in Motion” will perform April 9 through 11 at 7:30 in the Allred Theater in the Val A. Browning Center on WSU’s main campus. Tickets, which are available online and at the door, are $12 for adults and $10 for students, seniors and members of the military.

The Ziegfeld Theater’s production of “Les Miserables”

The Ziegfeld Theater, on the corner of 40th Street and Washington, will tell the timeless tale of love and forgiveness when they perform the Broadway and Hollywood favorite “Les Miserables.” “Les Mis” follows the story of Jean Valjean in 1815. After a 19-year stint in jail for theft, Valjean swears to change his life and give all he can to those around him. Meanwhile, one of the prison guards, Javert, from Valjean’s time in prison is hunting him down for breaking parole. Full of passionate melodies and heart-wrenching life lessons, audience members will feel the power that comes through love, forgiveness and redemption.

“Les Mis” at the Ziegfeld Theater will run April 10-May 16 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. plus Mondays on May 4 and 11. There will also be matinees at 2 p.m. on May 9 and 16. Tickets are $19 for adults, $17 for children, students and seniors. Additional $1 fee at the door, no fee online.

Centerpoint Legacy Theater’s “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”

Set in a French Riviera casino and centered around con man Lawrence Jameson and his “bodyguard” Andre, the two spend their days swindling women out of their money. Soon the duo encounter American Freddy Benson, Lawrence and Andre decide the city isn’t big enough for both of them. They make a wager that whoever can swindle $50,000 out a woman first can stay, while the slow-poke has to catch the first train out of town. Between the opulence of the French Riviera, the beauty of the women they meet and the hilarious schemes they come up with in order to win, the con men never even realize they are the ones being conned.

Besides being a hysterical misadventure in the art of conning, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” has many ties to WSU. Musical theater professor Jim Christian will be directing this production and the cast features a slew of current and past WSU alumni.

The production runs April 20 through May 16 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $23.25-$12.25 for adults, children, seniors and students are $19.25-$21.25
