Signpost staff’s favorite Halloween traditions and memories

Lauren Porter

My Halloween activities vary year to year, but the one thing I do without fail every October is watch “Hocus Pocus.” It may be super cliche, but there is something comforting in having holiday traditions, even if it’s as silly as watching “Hocus Pocus.” Plus, singing “I Put a Spell on You” at the top of your lungs can really put you in the Halloween spirit.

My favorite Halloween tradition when I was younger was putting sucker ghosts on the tree in our front yard and always eating macaroni and cheese before trick-or-treating. Now I mostly stay home and watch movies while trying to keep my dogs from losing their minds when the trick-or-treaters come to the door.

When I was a kid, I dressed up as undead versions of different X-Men characters. Now I just yell at little brats who don’t thank my wife for handing out candy. One would think I watch a bunch of horror films, but I like to save those for Valentine’s Day.

My favorite Halloween memory happened when my family and I still lived in southern California and I was six years old. We went all-out with our decorations. We had fake corpses, gobs of fake blood and a machine that made thunderous noises and creepy screams. It turned out that our house was too scary because we only had two trick-or-treaters, one of whom left crying.

My favorite Halloween memory was when I dressed as something scary for the first time. When you are little, you always want to be things like princesses or puppies. Instead, I decided to be a creepy clown. I had my stepmom make it look like I got shot in the head. I walked around all night with my face painted dead white with a gross, bleeding wound on my forehead. I thought I was pretty cool.

My favorite Halloween memory is when I was an LDS missionary in New York City. As Halloween approached, Hurricane Sandy was on the warpath. For two days straight, we were locked in our apartments for safety. As a way to kill time, we set up a sunshade and called it the Hurricane Survival Shelter, and we also discovered that a local Chinese restaurant still delivered food, so we spent the night eating Chinese in our makeshift shelter. We didn’t get candy, but it was a rocking time for all involved.
