Women’s Basketball

On Feb. 11, the Weber State women’s basketball team traveled to Sacramento, California, where they lost to Sacramento State 64-87.

WSU shot 41 percent from the field and 76 percent on the free-throw line. The Wildcats had 41 rebounds over SAC State’s 33.

Junior Deeshyra Thomas led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds. Following Thomas was freshman Emily Drake with 15 points, tying her career high. Senior Brittney Dunbar had 13 points and seven assists.

The Wildcats then traveled to Portland, Oregon, on Feb. 13, where they overcame a 13-point deficit and slaughtered the Vikings, 75-58.

Thomas led the team with 19 points. Following her were Quinn and Dunbar with 14 points and three steals each.

The Wildcats are now 8-4 in conference play, 16-7 overall. Weber State is back at home to take on Southern Utah on Feb. 18 and Northern Arizona on Feb. 20.

Track and Field

This weekend the men and women’s track and field team split up and competed in two of their final meets before the Big Sky Conference Championships. Most of the team competed in the Montana State meet, while limited athletes traveled to the Husky Classic in Seattle.

In Bozeman, Montana, freshman Aaliyah Crawford took first place in two events, including the 400 meters where she earned a new career high of 56.61, the second fastest time in the Big Sky Conference this season. Senior Desirae Cruse won the high jump for the third meet in a row with a mark of 5-05.00.

Senior Tony Osheku posted great times in both the 200 meters and 400 meters. He is now qualified for the conference meet in three events.

At the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington, senior Jamie Stokes broke her own record for the mile with a time of 4:35:83. Junior Joe Maloney qualified for the mile run by posting a time of 4:07.80.

Junior Ellie Child earned a new career best in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:40.21, the fifth best time in WSU history. Right behind her was junior Hailey Whetten who posted a time of 16:47.28 and is ranked seventh best in WSU history.

The Wildcats will now set their sights on the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships held on Feb. 25 – 27 in Montana.

Men and Women’s Tennis

The Weber State men’s tennis team beat Montana State 6-1 at home in their first conference match-up.

In the singles matches, senior Jakub Gewert beat his opponent 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot. Senior Todd Fought beat his challenger in the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Stefan Cooper triumphed in the No. 3 spot, 7-5, 6-4.

The men are now 1-0 in conference play, 2-4 overall. The team will travel next to the University of North Dakota on Feb. 21.

The Weber State women’s tennis team has now dropped to 0-7 on the season as they were defeated by Iowa State Sunday afternoon, 0-4.

The women’s tennis team will now travel to North Dakota on Feb. 20 where they will begin their conference season.
