Emergency medical professionals verify the ‘Heart Matters’

Weber State University will host two of the top emergency medical professionals in the country on Feb. 1 as part of the “Heart Matters” emergency medicine symposium lecture.

Sponsored by the Dumke College of Health Professions and the Department of Emergency Care and Rescue, the symposium will feature David Page, the Director of the Prehospital Care Research Forum at the University of California, Los Angeles, and Dr. Keith Lurie, Professor of Internal and Emergency Medicine at the University of Minnesota. During the symposium, Page will speak about the importance of research and evidence based practice in pre-hospital clinical care while Lurie will discuss the research he and his colleagues are working on regarding cardiac arrest.

Page is the co-founder of Fisdap, a skills tracking and testing application that is used by 75 percent of accredited EMS programs. He has won several awards for his research and was recently recognized as one of the top 10 EMS innovators in the country.

Lurie has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles and has also received multiple grant awards from the National Institute of Health and the Defense Department. He has also served on the American Heart Association Basic Life Support subcommittee and was a co-founder of Take Heart America, a non-profit organization focused on promoting different therapies that can improve the survival rate of those that suffer cardiac arrest outside of a hospital.

The symposium will begin at 11 a.m. in the Shepherd Union Ballroom. No registration is required. For more information, contact Bill Robertson at (801) 626-6521 or at [email protected].
