Men’s tennis makes first NCAA appearance

On May 13, the Weber State men’s tennis team traveled to Los Angeles, California, to compete in its first ever NCAA Tournament match. The Wildcats season came to an end when they were beaten by the No. 2 UCLA Bruins, 4-0.

The men’s tennis team clinched a spot in the NCAA tournament after claiming the Big Sky Championship title in a 4-3 win over University of Idaho.

Sophomore Stefan Cooper and senior Todd Fought were named first team Big Sky honors and senior Sanjay Goswami was named All-Big Sky second team.

Cooper went undefeated in Big Sky play, winning 27 matches this season. Fought had 24 wins and went 13-6 for the season. Goswami posted 26 total wins, 13-6 in both singles and doubles play.

Head coach Brad Ferreira was named Big Sky Conference men’s tennis Coach of the Year after leading his team to its seventh regular season title.

The Wildcats ended their season with a record of 14-8 overall.

Women’s tennis drops match 4-1 to NAU in Big Sky Tournament

The women’s tennis team wrapped up their season after dropping to 4-1 to Northern Arizona in the semifinal round of the Big Sky Tournament in Sacramento, California, on April 30.

Weber State advanced to the semifinal round after beating Montana 4-0 on April 29 in the quarterfinals of the Big Sky Championship Tournament.

This was the first post-season win for the women’s tennis team since 2005.

In the semifinals, senior Agata Bachanek defeated her opponent 6-6, 6-3, in the No. 1 spot, giving WSU their only point.

Bachanek was named to the All-Big Sky Second team after her 20 game winning season, 11 of those being in the No. 1 singles spot.

Senior Kristi Elmer was an honorable mention for her 14 wins in the No. 2 singles spot for the 2015-2016 season.

The Wildcats finished their season 10-14 overall.

Track and field season ends at the NCAA Preliminary Meet

Four Wildcat track and field members competed in the NCAA Preliminary meet in Lawrence, Kansas, on May 30.

Junior Ellie Child finished 26th overall in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:35.66.

Junior Hailey Whetten placed 27th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 35:41.72.

Junior Natasha Powell came in 34th place in the hammer throw, positing a mark of 182-11.

Freshman Aaliyah Crawford finished 41st in the 200 meters with a time of 24.22.

The Weber State women’s team finished seventh overall in the Big Sky Championship Tournament that took place in Greeley, Colorado on May 11-14.

The men concluded their season by tying for eighth place in the Big Sky Conference Championship Tournament.
