Weber State University’s volleyball team looked to add another win to the season when it took on the Montana State University Bobcats at home in the Swenson Gym. After a highly competitive match, the Wildcats were unable to do so and lost in three straight sets (25-22, 28-26 and 25-20).

WSU lost to the University of Montana on Friday, so Saturday’s loss to MSU meant that WSU dropped its second match in as many days, and is now 5-15 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.

The Wildcats came out and got behind early, 6-0, in the first set. They were able to make a run and made the first set competitive, but were never able to grab the lead and lost 25-22.

The Wildcats kept it tight in the second set as the teams traded points throughout. The Wildcats were able to take their first lead of the match when they went up 25-24. The Swenson Gym crowd really got behind the team, but the Wildcats were unable to maintain this lead and fell in the second set 28-26.

The third set looked a lot like the first, with the Bobcats holding a lead throughout the set. The Wildcats seemed to rally a few times behind the cheers of their home crowd, but again came up short and lost the third set 25-20. Saturday’s loss was to an MSU team that had not yet won in any conference game this year.

“Our offense did pretty well, but we couldn’t figure out a way to stop the other team,” said outside hitter Audrey Biggs, who finished the match with 10 kills. “We have got to be on both ways.”

The other bright spot for the Wildcats was Samantha Staker, who finished with 31 assists through all three sets.

WSU’s crowd was active and loud throughout the match and definitely wanted to see its volleyball team do well. The Wildcats did their best to give the supportive crowd what it wanted, evident by the competitive nature with which they played.

There were glimpses of impressive play, but inconsistency and unforced errors continued to keep the team from stringing some wins together.

“They (the crowd) are waiting for us to do something, and whether we win or lose, they have been there for us,” said WSU head coach Tom Peterson.

Peterson also talked about the upcoming match against conference foe Idaho State University.

“They are a good team and very well coached. We are not expected to win against them, and hopefully that can take some of the pressure off.”

The Wildcats will take on the ISU Bengals at home today at 7 p.m. in the Swenson Gym, as they try to beat one of the better teams in the Big Sky Conference.
