WSU women’s and men’s tennis knot wins
The Weber State University women’s tennis team got the 2014 season under way Thursday with a 4-3 win over Big Sky rival Idaho State University. The Wildcats kicked off the match by taking two of three doubles contests to secure the doubles point.
In singles play, Agata Bachanek, Thais Kurer and Annika Karlsen each earned points to give the Wildcats the four points necessary to secure the overall match win.
The Wildcats will return to action today and tomorrow as they face Boise State University and the University of Seattle in Boise, Idaho.
The Wildcat men’s tennis team earned its first win of the early 2014 season on Saturday with a 5-2 win, also against ISU.
ISU won two of the three doubles matches to take one point, but the Bengals could not keep pace in singles play. WSU stormed back with wins in the top five spots in the lineup to clinch the match.
Jakub Gewert and Landon Barlow each cruised to straight-sets wins. Oliver Good and Caio Poitena both also won in straight sets, but needed tiebreakers to win.
Former WSU football coach hired as coordinator
Former Weber State University head football coach Jody Sears, who was let go in November after two years, found another job quickly, remaining in the Big Sky Conference. Sears has been hired as the defensive coordinator at California State University, Sacramento.
“We’re excited to have a coach with Jody’s background on our staff,” said CSUS head coach Marshall Sperbeck. “Having been a head coach in this conference and a defensive coordinator in the Pac-12, he brings a lot of experience to the position.”
Sears’ official start date at CSUS will be April 1.
WSU represented at the Super Bowl
This weekend, former Weber State University standout Paul McQuistan will be part of Super Bowl XLVIII as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. McQuistan will become the seventh former WSU player to participate in the Super Bowl.
The Oregon native played in 16 games and started in 14 games for the Seahawks this season as Seattle finished 13-3, the best record in the NFC.
McQuistan was drafted in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders, following a four-year career at WSU. McQuistan played in 41 career games for the Wildcats in 2002-05 under head coaches Jerry Graybeal and Ron McBride. He started every game of the last three seasons, was an All-American in 2005 and earned All-Conference honors twice in his career.
The first Wildcat to play in the Super Bowl was Lee White, a member of the New York Jets team with Joe Namath that defeated the Baltimore Colts 16-7 in Super Bowl III following the 1968 season. The last Wildcat to win a Super Bowl ring was Marcus Mailei, who was a member of the 2009 New Orleans Saints team that won Super Bowl XLIV.
