Wildcat Welcome, a day committed to making the transition to college easier, showcased WSU’s 225 majors and offered aid to potential and current students on Wednesday. Wildcat Welcome is an event offered to students as part of the WSU Major Fest.

The fest is open to all prospective students, parents and counselors to take in the taste of WSU and experience the university firsthand.

Wildcat Welcome was scheduled at two different times on Wednesday in an effort to accommodate high school students’ and their parents’ schedules.

“This (Major Fest) is perfect for students, both new and current, to explore Weber’s curriculum, allowing them to sample bits from all the paths available for them,” said Margarita Vara, senior academic adviser.

Students attending the event could participate in guided tours of the campus and receive scholarship offers. Prospective students also had the opportunity for one-on-one conversations about a certain major with alumni or teachers at their respective booths.

Wildcat Welcome offered small panels and discussion groups to help new students figure out on-campus housing options and how to pay for college, get involved and transition into college life.

“Major Fest is the perfect opportunity for students to talk to (a) teacher,” said Sherrie Jensen, advisement coordinator for the WSU Department of Heath Promotion and Human Performance. “This is the only time we’re together and they can ask us all the same questions to different people to see what they’d really like to know about. I also love how students always come back to personally thank me for my help. I have a wall of all the thank-you cards I’ve received over the years.”

First Year Experience academic adviser Morgan Voet said the Major Fest at WSU has been really successful.

“Weber State Major Fest is a lot of fun . . . I hope they keep bringing in high school students,” she said. “Means more students for the FYE.”
