Cannons will be booming and fireworks will light the sky tonight as tens of thousands gather for the 36th annual Lindquist pops concert.
“I think it’s a great time just to listen to the music,” said Dave Hanks, who brought his three children to see the concert.
He was tossing a football with his son as they waited for the concert to start. “Being here in the grassy open area you can listen to the music while everything else is going on,” he said.
Weber State University is hosting the hourlong concert starting at 9 p.m. The finale will be live cannons accompanying Tchaikovsky’s famous “1812 Overture.”
Those who can’t make it to campus can listen to the concert live thanks to KWCR radio.
Following the concert, spectators will be treated to a half-hour fireworks display, the largest fireworks show in the state, put on by Fireworks West.
The concert is sponsored by the Lindquist family, longtime supporters of Weber State. The first concert was held over three decades ago when the Lindquist plaza was first dedicated, according to Bev Rudd, WSU events coordinator.
“They’ve always wanted a pops concert here,” Rudd said. “The family is adamant that this will continue for years to come.”
The concert is a collaboration between Fireworks West, KWCR radio, the New American Philharmonic orchestra and cannoneers from Salt Lake, with cooperation from WSU police, fire marshal and WSU facilities management.
“It’s a huge team effort,” Rudd said. “I’ve got a phenomenal team that just pulls this off.”
The campus was shut down at 6 p.m. Saturday so the community could come in early to mark their spots for the concert.
